Taipei, Sept. 10 (CNA) U.S.-based Amkor Technology Inc., the world's second-largest integrated circuit packaging and testing service provider, inaugurated its fourth plant in Taiwan Monday, saying that it will continue to invest in the country.

The new plant, located in the Taoyuan-Lungtan section of the Hsinchu Science Park, will develop advanced IC packaging and testing technology such as wafer level packaging and turnkey solutions for pump probe self-focusing technology, a move that is expected to raise the competitive edge of Taiwan's IC industry.

Amkor President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Kelley attended the inauguration of the new plant, which has investment totaling NT$2.3 billion (US$74.68 million), according to Amkor Taiwan.

It is the first time Amkor has established a plant in a Taiwan science park. Its three other factories are also in Taoyuan, but not in a science park.

The Hsinchu Science Park Administration said Amkor's new plant is expected to meet rising demand from 5G, the Internet of Things and self-driving technology developers.

Mike Ma , president of Amkor Taiwan, said the new plant is expected to boost Amkor Taiwan's sales by 10 percent, and the four plants are expected to account for about 15 percent of Amkor's sales worldwide.

Amkor trails only Taiwan-based ASE Technology Holding Co. in the global IC packaging and testing market.

Ma said the plant is expected to need almost 1,000 engineers and technicians in the future.

Currently, the four Amkor plants in Taiwan employ about 4,000 people, the company said.

Ma said that as more and more customers are choosing Taiwan for IC packaging and testing services, Amkor is determined to invest more money to better serve its customers.

The Lungtan plant is Amkor's 22nd IC packaging and testing base worldwide, Amkor Taiwan said. At present, Amkor has production bases in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, China, Malaysia and Portugal.

Ma said Amkor will use Taiwan, China, Portugal and South Korea as its high-end technology development hubs.

Market analysts said Amkor's clients include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), TSMC's smaller Taiwanese rival United Microelectronics Corp., U.S.-based Intel Corp. and Qualcomm Inc., and Geneva-headquartered STMicroelectronics.
