SHARJAH, 24th March, 2017 (WAM) -- The Environment and Protected Areas Authority, EPAA, in Sharjah is preparing to mark the Earth Hour initiative by organising awareness activities and programmes at Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah City and Khorfakkan in the Eastern Region of Sharjah, on Saturday, 25th March.
Earth Hour is being celebrated worldwide this year under the tagline "Shine a Light on Climate Action."
The initiative is organised with the aim of promoting social responsibility and involvement, and to activate partnerships between local organisations. It includes awareness exhibitions about Earth Hour, its mission and importance, educational workshops for the public, and a series of contests and entertainment shows to raise awareness about the world’s largest movement to address climate change.
"Earth Hour is an important initiative through which countries and organisations contribute to saving energy and protecting natural resources by reducing carbon emissions, which affect the environment and living organisms," said Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the EPPA.
"By organising this activity in collaboration with Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, SEWA, we are looking forward to building a better future for the next generation by enabling them to benefit from sustainable resources."
She noted that the initiative is aimed at activating partnerships between local institutions in the Emirate of Sharjah and encouraging community involvement. She added that the initiative also includes many activities, such as an awareness exhibition, the distribution of T-shirts and illuminated items, drawing and painting workshops, candle sculpture, clowns, Earth Hour performances, lighting shows and much more.
Hana Al Suwaidi said that the goal of the activity is to continue co-operation among local institutions in the Emirate of Sharjah and to encourage community participation during this hour by switching off lights and using dozens of candles to form the Earth Hour logo. "This initiative is aimed at promoting the spirit of social responsibility to protect the environment and natural resources to ensure a more sustainable planet for the future generations," she added.
"Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organised by the Worldwide Fund for Nature, WWF. The event is held worldwide annually encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electronic devices for one hour from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. to raise awareness about the risks of climate change," Al Suwaidi said.
The participating entities in the Earth Hour initiative include Sharjah Police General Headquarters, SEWA, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), Sharjah Airport Authority, Sharjah Medical Services Department, the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (Health Education Department), Desert Park Centres (Arabia’s Wildlife Centre and Children’s Farm), Wasit Wetland Centre, Department of Children Centres, the Directorate of Human Resources, the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development (Takatof and Sanid), Asaad Shaab (Happiest Peoples) Voluntary Team, Sharjah City Municipality (Agriculture and Gardens Department), and Al Resalah American International School, RAIS.
